This forth biggest city of Sri Lanka is situated at the mouth of the Mahaweli river and has one of the biggest and deepest natural harbours.

In the heyday of sailingships it was one of the main Asian harbours. A notable building build by the Portugese in 1623 is Fort Frederick. A steep road will bring you to the top of Swami Rock; a high cliff on which the Hindu temple Koneswaram is situated. This temple is one of the main sanctuaries on the island devoted to Shiva.
